Issues

One of the first aims that NillumBUG wishes to achieve, is the formation of a cycle path from Diamond Creek to Hurstbridge. The more members that NillumBUG has, the more effective cyclists can be in achieving this and other projects.

Diamond Creek Road and Greensborough Bypass:
We are currently making enquiries with VicRoads and Nillumbik Council as to ways in which safety can be improved for cyclists along Diamond Creek Road, between Civic Drive and Yan Yean Road. Ideally, we would like a cycle path, which would enable commuters and recreational cyclists alike, access to the new path along the Greensborough Bypass.

Wattle Glen road shoulder, linking the pedestrian cycle path.  There is a ~200m stretch of path which has no protection from a vehicle moving at 80km/hr. Various suggestions have been made to solve this dangerous situation. After much communication with Nillumbik Council and VicRoads, we are hopeful of a resolution to this problem by mid 2008. The community should expect to see the construction of a footpath/cyclepath along the eastern side of Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, between Sunnyside Crescent and Warrington Crescent.  Council is currently awaiting approval from Vicroads before it can begin construction, as this is Vicroads land.

Windy Mile.  Nillumbug would like Vic Roads to make cycle lanes along this road, especially heading uphill out of Diamond Creek.  The Windy Mile has been earmarked by Vic Roads as part of the Principal Bicycle Network (PBN), and we are now awaiting a response from Vic Roads.

Main Hurstbridge Road (Melways 12 D 5), on the bend just beyond the Diamond Valley College through to Kamarooka Drive. Narrow, virtually no shoulders on road. Dangerous for cyclists. This issue has been raised with VicRoads and will need to be rasied again.

Proposed railway crossing at Eltham North.  Whilst new pedestrian crossings are currently unpopular with the Victorian government, Nillumbug is strongly in favour of a new crossing being installed in Eltham North between Balmoral Circuit and Drysdale Avenue.  Many people illegally cross the line at this point, including children on their way to school.  The nearest legal crossing is a few kilometres away and is a significant barrier to people wishing to walk.  An excellent proposal has been put together by Paul Bunnell and can be viewed by clicking here (1.44 MB).

Please contact us if you have any suggestions for future projects.
